The upcoming Thunderbolts film is set to bring significant changes to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), although the specifics are still kept under wraps. Marvel Studios has been subtly setting up this team for some time, with Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s character Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, appearing in various projects such as The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Black Widow and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. In these appearances, Val has been seen recruiting talents like John Walker (Wyatt Russell) and Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh). While her ultimate goal remains unclear, David Harbour, a member of the Thunderbolts ensemble, has recently hinted at a major revelation.
“There is a bomb drop thing we add to the universe, which will be very exciting for the movie to do at the end of this particular phase that we’re ending,” Harbour told ComicBook.
In a conversation during San Diego Comic-Con, Harbour was asked to provide more details about his earlier hint of a significant twist in the Thunderbolts film. “Our characters are going to interact with something that we don’t really understand, and it fundamentally changes the course of the way things expand,” Harbour explained. “That’s all I’m saying. Oh my God, I’m getting calls tomorrow,” he jokingly added.
Although the nature of this twist still remains uncertain, it appears to be connected to Lewis Pullman’s character Bob. Pullman, known for his role in Top Gun: Maverick replaced Steven Yeun. Yeun was cast as Sentry in Thunderbolts, a character renowned in Marvel Comics for possessing the “power of one million exploding suns.” Sentry, whose real name is Robert Reynolds, matches with Pullman’s character being called Bob, a common nickname for Robert, informs Comicbook.
It further suggests that the role of Sentry in the MCU could indeed be transformative. His introduction might bring significant responses from key players in the MCU, especially if, as Harbour hinted, the Thunderbolts team struggles to comprehend his powers, potentially regarding him as an immediate and substantial threat.
To know more about it, MCU fans might have to just wait for less than a year now as Thunderbolts is set to release in theaters on May 2, 2025.
