Kannada star Darshan Thoogudeepa was recently arrested, along with others, in connection with the case of Renuka Swamy’s murder. Renuka Swamy, whose mortal remains were recovered on June 8, is alleged to have been murdered by men working with Darshan. The case is still being investigated. Renuka Swamy had allegedly sent derogatory messages to Darshan’s reported girlfriend, actress Pavithra Gowda. This did not sit well with Darshan, who allegedly orchestrated a plan with his supporters to abduct, torture, and murder Renuka Swamy. The victim’s body was later found discarded in a drain in Bengaluru. There are still many details yet to be divulged by the police in this case, but the entire incident has shook the Kannada film industry. Some have taken a pro-Darshan stance, while some have expressed shock at the revered actor being part of such a crime.
Actress Rachita Ram has also spoken out about the issue and although she has not taken any sides per se, she has acknowledged Darshan as her mentor in the film industry and said she finds it difficult to believe that he could be behind such an atrocity. Rachita Ram wrote on Instagram, “I am writing this note not as an actress but as a common citizen. First of all I pray that Renuka Swamy’s soul may rest in peace and may God give strength to her family to bear the grief. I hope that legal justice will prevail. It’s hard to believe that Darshan sir, who introduced me to the film industry, is like a guru to me, and who corrected my life’s mistakes and guided me, is involved in such a case. I trust that the truth will be revealed through the police investigation.”
Darshan and Pavitra Gowda were arrested on Tuesday, June 11, by the Kamakshipalya police from the sets of Devil: The Hero. There are a total of 17 accused in the case and some other accused were arrested later.
