Martin Scorsese feels that technology has changed so rapidly that the only constant is the individual’s unique voice.

Iconic American filmmaker Martin Scorsese shared his thoughts on the current state of cinema and the future of the industry during a press conference at the Berlin Film Festival, where he received an Honorary Golden Bear. Addressing concerns about the potential decline of cinema, Scorsese expressed optimism, suggesting that cinema is not dying but rather evolving.

According to Variety, Martin Scorsese said, “I don’t think it’s dying at all, no. I think it’s transforming.” He highlighted the rapid evolution of technology, which has changed the way audiences consume films. While acknowledging the traditional allure of movie theatres as communal spaces, he emphasised the importance of embracing new platforms and formats.

Martin Scorsese observed that technology has changed so rapidly and extensively that the only constant is the individual’s unique voice. He noted that creative expression can now manifest in various forms, from short videos on TikTok to lengthy films or miniseries. Despite the dominance of streaming services and the rise of artificial intelligence in filmmaking, Scorsese encouraged filmmakers not to fear technology but to use it as a tool for artistic expression.

“Don’t become a slave to the technology — let us control the technology and put it in the right direction,” he advised. “The right direction being from the individual voice, rather than something that is just consumed and tossed away.”

Scorsese also shared updates on his upcoming projects, including a film about Jesus, which he described as a concept he is still “contemplating.” He expressed a desire to create a unique and thought-provoking film that is both entertaining and meaningful.

“I’m not quite sure yet how to go about it,” Scorsese admitted. He suggested that after completing their promotional activities for the film, perhaps they would “get some sleep” and then awaken with a “fresh idea on how to do it.”

In addition to receiving the Honorary Golden Bear, Martin Scorsese’s 2006 film The Departed was screened as a homage to the director. His latest film, Killers of the Flower Moon, has received 10 Oscar nominations, including Best Director, Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor for Robert De Niro and Best Actress for Lily Gladstone.
