Adam Sandler, Drew Barrymore's 50 First Dates Had A 'Not So Happy' Ending
On her show, Drew Barrymore spoke about her hit film, 50 First Dates, sharing major details about its ending.

It has been 20 years since Adam Sandler’s Henry Roth made an amnesia-stricken Lucy Whitmore (Drew Barrymore) fall in love with him in 50 First Dates. The film, which came as a very unexpected rom-com, had its own share of drama, given the traumatic nature of Lucy’s ailment, which makes her forget everything that happened to her after waking up in the morning. Henry, who finds himself drawn to Lucy, makes every possible effort to make her fall for him. While the film ends on a happy note with the couple starting a family, it wasn’t always the plan.

Drew Barrymore recently opened up about an alternative ending to 50 First Dates, also sharing that it also had a different title. Speaking on her talk show, Barrymore said that the original ending was her saying, “You should go and live your life, because this is no life here.'” And he goes away, as he does, and he comes back, walks into the restaurant, and he just sits down and says, ‘Hi, I’m Henry.’ And the film ends.”

During this conversation, the actress also shared that the film was previously titled 50 First Kisses, a drama that was set in Seattle.

Previously, director Peter Segal also revealed the original script details, which could have actually changed the story. “Originally, the story was written to take place in Seattle, and when we decided to change it to Hawaii, it took on a whole new personality, and now I can’t imagine the movie not having been filmed there because the island and the people became unique characters and an innate part of the film that was never originally planned,” he told Entertainment Weekly.

“This ending is very different from the original script version, which had Lucy waking up in bed and immediately looking at a mural on the ceiling that tells the story of her accident and life since,” he said while describing the previous version.

Coming back to the original film, 50 First Dates focused on the love story between Henry and Lucy, who unite at the end after going through various challenges. The end shows them together with their daughter in Alaska, where Henry is working.
