WHO cautioned that flavoured vapes must be treated similarly to other harmful tobacco-related items, asserting that the tobacco industry uses such products to gain trust

The World Health Organization (WHO) recently urged governments around the world, to take strict measures against e-cigarettes and asked them to prohibit the use of flavoured vapes. WHO cautioned that these products must be treated similarly to other harmful tobacco-related items, asserting that the tobacco industry uses such products to gain trust. Additionally, the organisation claimed there was insufficient evidence supporting the effectiveness of vapes to help quit smoking and cautioned about their addiction among young individuals. Here are the major risks associated with vaping.

  1. Nicotine, known for its highly addictive nature, intensifies the cravings for more. This addiction can become overpowering, making it difficult for individuals to stop using vapes, even when they do not desire to do so or when health issues arise.
  2. EVALI is a severe lung condition linked to vaping, causing harm to the lungs and its symptoms include coughing, shortness of breath and chest pain. This condition can be risky and in severe cases, can be life threatening.
  3. E-cigarettes can increase the chance of developing asthma and various other lung related conditions. For individuals already experiencing respiratory issues, vaping can worsen these pre-existing conditions.
  4. Apart from impacting the lungs, vaping and similar things can badly affect the heart and brain. Nicotine has shown effects of health risks. Its consumption is also associated with obstructing brain development, elevating blood pressure and narrowing arteries.
  5. In the past, there have been several incidents where the batteries of electronic cigarettes have exploded, leading to severe injuries and burns among users. The explosions often happen due to malfunctioning or poorly manufactured batteries.
  6. E-cigarettes contains nicotine and various harmful chemicals, which not only risks users’ life but also affects people around them. In children and pregnant women, it can have serious consequences.
  7. In recent years, individuals have even added cannabis, CBD oils and other hazardous materials to their vapes. This further complicates the emergencies, where doctors face challenges in treating these patients as they couldn’t identify the specific substances inhaled.
  8. Compared to a typical cigarette that lasts for a few minutes, e-cigarettes can be used for a longer duration. This can result in a higher nicotine intake, which can affect the lungs and other organs.
