THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Government School, Kalady, in collaboration with the Karuna Sai Psycho Park at Vellanadu, flagged off a year-long campaign against drugs as part of the Anti-Narcotics Day observation the other day. The joint venture of various clubs in the school was inaugurated by Kalady councillor K Krishnankutty on the school premises. Owing to the enthusiastic participation of students, the one-week long programme was later extended to a year. Photographs detailing the harmful effects of narcotics were on display. A film produced by the Thiruvananthapuram South URC ‘The Friendship’ and a CD depicting the carcinogenic effects of the dreadful drugs on vital organs were screened. Literary competitions such as story writing, versification, poster designing and letter-writing with the focal theme ‘A glorious world devoid of drugs’ were also held. A reflection of children hailing from poor families surfaced in all the works. All winners were given prizes. Dr Jayakrishnan, Oncologist, Regional Cancer Centre, lectured on the numerous ill-effects of narcotics. N R Madhujan, director, Psychopark, led the awareness programme on the concluding day of ‘Anti-Drug week’ on Friday. Various programmes are planned to be conducted on forthcoming days, including family survey, awareness drives and exhibitions in association with residents’ associations and charitable organisations. PTA president K Sreekumari presided over the function.
