Rajinikanth’s films make a lot of money and where there is money there are no political or ideological barriers. Certainly not for the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.
The top DMK leadership, including chief MK Stalin, will back 'Petta' and hope for its success.
It doesn't matter that the superstar is seen as politically inclined towards the BJP or that he may even emerge as a political opponent to the DMK in Tamil Nadu. Here's why.
Firstly, it is common knowledge that the film is being produced by Sun Pictures which is owned by the Maran family’s Sun Network.
Media tycoon Kalanithi Maran and former Union minister Dayanidhi Maran, owners of the Sun network, are children of the late Union Minister Murasoli Maran, nephew of departed DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi.
They have had a blow hot, blow cold relationship with Stalin in the past, but for the moment seem like are on the right side of the party boss.
The lesser known and more interesting fact is that Stalin’s son Udhayanidhi Stalin’s Red Giant Movies has the distribution rights for 'Petta' in the lucrative North Arcot, South Arcot, Madurai, Salem and Chengalpet areas.
Such rights for a Rajini film are worth tens of crores in the film business and mean huge profits if the movie is a hit.
Udhayanidhi had tweeted how happy he was to have got the distribution rights. But, the tweet led to an exchange of words with senior journalist RK Radhakrishnan, a keen observer of the party.
Awesome! Prime example of being part of a party to make money. Kudos! https://t.co/HWJCGcEcQF— RadhakrishnanRK (@RKRadhakrishn) December 8, 2018

Stalin wished “dear friend” Rajini on his birthday on Wednesday. Perhaps, the party top boss too will be rooting for ‘Petta’.
In any event, it may not matter politically to the DMK as it is doubtful if Rajnikanth will even launch a political party ahead of the 2019 elections.
For the moment, the asuperstar is enjoying the success of his last film 2.0 and firmly remains Tamil Nadu‘s most powerful actor.
As long as he doesn’t rise as a political star, it seems the DMK leadership may only be too happy to get a share of the spoils from a Rajni-starrer.
