THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Even after conducting an all-party meeting on the Vilappilsala waste plant issue which was presided over by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, the row over the plant is still burning hot with the agitating Vilappilsala Janakeeya Samithi activists making it clear that they would intensify their protest. The leaders of the Samithi, sensing lack of integrity from the part of the Corporation officials, have made it clear that they would further intensify their ongoing protest. Samithi president Burhan alleged that the Corporation was trying to vilify the protesters by concocting false accusations that they were behind a recent attack on a lorry driver who was transporting waste from the city to the plant. He said that transportation of waste from the city to the plant would be obstructed if the authorities fail to bow to their demand that theVilappilsala garbage treatment plant should be shut down. He also termed the meeting a political gimmick on the part of the officials to pacify the public. Meanwhile, Mayor K Chandrika has made it clear that the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation would not heed to the demand of closing the plant. “Decentralising the treatment of the garbage and shedding of plastic waste will minimise the grievances of the public,” she said. She also said that the Corporation, with the assistance of the Government, would construct four sub-waste treatment plants in the city. A plastic shedding unit will be installed on the premises of the Health Inspector’s office at Manacaud. The ongoing construction of a leachate treatment facility at the Vilappilsala plant will be completed by November this year, she said. The meeting on Monday had also recommended a rapid reduction of the volume of the waste produced and transported to Vilappilsala from the city. For fulfilling this recommendation, a biogas plant will be soon established by the Corporation which will help in decomposing the garbage collected from households, she added.
