Agartala: Tripura on Wednesday bid adieu to its last Maharaja Kirit Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur who died on Tuesday as hundreds of mourners from all walks wept and shouted slogans in his praise.

Amid sounding of bugles and a 20-gun salute by the soldiers of the Tripura State Rifles, the mortal remains of the 74-year-old 'maharaja'-turned-politician were consigned to flames with full state honours and royal tradition.

Kirit Bikram's son Pradyout performed the last rites at the Battala royal cremation ground here where Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, members from royal families of Nepal and Gwalior and various other leaders from across the political spectrum were among those present.

The erstwhile princely northeastern state witnessed unprecedented crowds turning up to pay their respects to Kirit Bikram, who was the son of the last king of Tripura Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur.

The state government had declared a state mourning and a holiday on Wednesday.

Kirit Bikram was related to the royal family of Gwalior. His first wife Padma Devi, who died in 1963, was the late Madhav Rao Scindia's elder sister.
