CHENNAI: Parties from across the political spectrum have expressed their shock and regret over the violence and resultant police firing in Paramakudi and Madurai. Expressing their condolences to the families of the three men killed as a result of the violence, leaders have appealed to the people as well as political outfits to work together to maintain calm in southern districts.“That three have been killed in police firing in Paramakudi is shocking, distressing and worrying. I urge the government to ensure those injured get the necessary medical care,” said MDMK leader Vaiko.“Disruption of public peace and destruction of public property are not acceptable under any circumstances. These are detrimental to peace and order. I appeal to all to refrain from acting in anger at the incident, keeping in mind the plight of children, women and senior citizens,” Vaiko addedLeaders from across the political parties urged the government to institute a judicial inquiry headed by a High Court judge, and take strict action against those responsible for the violence. They also appealed to the people, political parties and social organisations to actively work together to maintain peace.CPM state secretary G Ramakrishnan strongly criticised the police decision to arrest Tamilaga Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam chief John Pandian, which sparked off the violence. “On September 9, a Dalit student, Palanikumar Thangavel, was murdered in an act of casteist violence. In this tense situation, the decision to arrest John Pandian shows the immaturity of the police. As a result of this, the situation worsened and undesirable incidents have taken place,” he said. Ramakrishnan also called for stringent action against those responsible for the murder of Palanikumar, for creating a tense atmosphere.Meanwhile, CPI state secretary D Pandian had a word of caution for the government. “Steps must be taken to ensure this disruption in Tamil Nadu’s peace does not escalate into a caste conflict. CPI urges the government to announce a comprehensive inquiry into the violence and the events surrounding it,” he said.
