After the partys routing at polls, police fear they may have to take action against its bigwigs in Alagiris bastion...

MADURAI:  Some Inspectors and Deputy Superintendents of Police in Madurai, known for their ‘allegiance’ to the DMK, are reportedly lobbying extensively to be posted elsewhere.Fearing that they would be forced to take action against the local bigwigs of the DMK, still smarting from its complete rout in the recently held Assembly elections, the police officials’ sole concern at the moment is not do anything that may antagonise the party functionaries. In fact, some have even stopped taking phone calls from DMK strongmen fearing that they might land in trouble. The developments come amid the recent transfer of 500 constables, ordered by Superintendent of Police Asra Garg to check corruption in the police force. The move is meant to ensure that the police personnel respond to all complaints after setting aside their vested interests, which they might have developed by working at the same station for several years. Many constables have been working in the same station for 10 years at a stretch without a transfer. The other criterion taken into account was the integrity of the police personnel concerned. The files of all the constables were meticulously studied by the district police office before transfer orders were issued. In case of corruption charges against a policeman, he was transferred to a place at least 100 km away from the present station. This was achieved by transferring personnel from one division to another. In all other cases, the constables were transferred to one of the three places they had requested. In a similar drive, SIs and Special Sub-Inspectors have also been transferred in the district. Here also the same pattern was followed.
