CHENNAI: Tension prevailed in an otherwise peaceful Defence Colony, Nandambakkam, when a purportedly drunken DMK loyalist created ruckus in front of a house where sleuths of Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) conducted a raid on Tuesday. The drunk man, who attempted to attack media photographers, vanished from the spot when media representatives informed the police.Even as DVAC officials were busy inside the house, which belonged to Durga Shankar, son of former IAS official and secretary to former CM M Karunanidhi, Rajamanickam, the DMK man suddenly appeared on the scene and began verbally abusing media persons waiting outside.Residents identified him as Rajendran, a staunch DMK loyalist. He asked photographers not to shoot pictures and attempted to attack them when they asked him to stay quiet.Finding it difficult to handle him, media persons alerted the suburban police. St Thomas Mount Assistant Commissioner, who received the information, directed Nandambakkam inspector Anandraj to go to the spot. Sensing that he could land in trouble, Rajendran vanished from the spot in no time. A few photographers, who were outraged by the man’s behaviour, said they would take up the matter with the Chief Minister.Meanwhile, the 10-member DVAC team led by DSP Thirunavukarasu, which arrived at the house at 8 am, left by 3 pm after reportedly verifying documents and bank accounts. Sources said Rajamanickam, his wife and daughter-in-law where present in the house at the time of the raid. “The officers locked the house from inside and were checking something. They did not let me inside and asked me not to let anyone inside the compound,” said security guard Umai Durai. Many lawyers were also seen in front of the house. They were joined by DMK functionaries, who claimed that they were asked by the headquarters to visit the spot.
