Police on Wednesday formed three teams to nab the killers of George Brito, a murder accused who was hacked to death in broad daylight on Tuesday when he was on his way back from making an appearance in court to fulfill preconditions for his bail.
Superintendent of Police (North) S Ramaraj said the teams would be headed by Inspector Raghunayagam, Inspector Bascaradass and Sub-Inspector Jaisankar.
Brito was an accused in the 2008 murder of rowdy Kaarthick. The police have so far detained one person connection with the case. The daring murder was suspected to be an act of revenge by Kaarthick’s relatives.
Brito’s murder was not the first instance where gang war had led to casualty. The gangs operating in Puducherry had become increasingly audacious and even attacked rivals in the presence of police in broad daylight.
Notorious history-sheeter Jegan was killed in a similar audacious bomb attack by rival gang members on August 10 when he was returning from the court in a police van. Jagan fell into the radar of the rival gang in July 2004 when his associates murdered Jayakumar, a rival gang member, in a bomb attack.
Jayakumar’s father Subbu, who retaliated by murdering a Jegan gang member, was later eliminated in another bomb attack. Jegan, an accused in the murder of Jayakumar, allegedly attacked Manigandan, a rival member, inside the prison. Manigandan, however, survived and reportedly attempted to kill Jegan at the Puducherry court complex. Finally, Jegan reportedly met his end in the hands of the associates of Manigandan, who is suspected to have masterminded the attack from the Yanam sub-jail.
On June 2, rivalry to gain control over the panchayats of Vaithikuppam-Kurusukuppam led to the murder of former panchayat chief Jagadesan. His rival Moorthy and four hired hitmen later surrendered before the Magistrate.
