New Delhi: Three Jaish militants have been killed in the encounter that broke out on Sunday afternoon in Kulgam district's Turigam village. A police officer and an army jawan have also been killed. The police officer, Aman Thakur, was killed after receiving a bullet injury in his head.

The army man has been identified as Ranveer Somvair of 34 RR.

Two security personnel and three civilians were also reportedly injured.

The joint team of Army, CRPF and Special Operation Group (SOG) launched a cordon-and-search operation in Turigam village of Kulgam after receiving inputs of presence of militants in the area.

The militants fired upon the security forces, who retaliated, triggering a gun-battle.

The militants who were killed include, Raqib Ahmad Sheikh, resident of Shiganpora in Kulgam. The other two militants who were killed are, Numan and Waleed. They hail from Rawalpindi and Punjab province respectively. All of the three killed are JeM militants.

A 2011-batch JK Police Services officer and a resident of Doda district in the Jammu region, Thakur was leading the police team in the encounter with JeM militants.

Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police (DGP) Dilbagh Singh said, "It is an unfortunate incident, in which we have lost a brave officer. He was a fighter and he led Sunday's operation himself."

Thakur was posted as the DySP (operation) in Kulgam, a militancy-affected area of south Kashmir, two years ago and had successfully carried out combat operations in the area.

He was awarded the DGP's Commendation Medal and Certificate for his exemplary service only last month.
