BANGALORE: Sixteen per cent of the people who visit hospitals are senior citizens, spells out a recent study conducted by Columbia Asia Referral Hospital.Out of that, 30 per cent are treated for cardiac problems and 16 per cent come with orthopaedic issues.“Senior citizens do need a lot of attention,” points out Dr Sunil Rao, general manager, Columbia Asia Referral Hospital.Gauging the situation well, the hospital, on Sunday, will hold a walkathon where three generations will walk hand in hand and take a symbolic pledge to take care of their parents in their old age.“Essentially, we wanted to promote this social cause.Since we are in the health industry, we come across quite a lot of senior citizens. And in Bangalore, because of the busy life people lead, senior citizens are left with little care. It is time we inculcate good habits in young people.Youngsters have to understand that one day, they will also have to go through the problems of old age,” says Dr Rao.According to Dr Rao, the primary problem older people face is that of co-morbid conditions — prevalence of more than one ailment at the same time. “It substantially needs extra attention — sometimes help at home or even rehabilitation requirement,” he says. He points out that though there is help available commercially, in the form of home nurses, bureaus and rehabilitation centres, it is emotional support that senior citizens really need.“Family support is what matters the most. Elders should feel cared for emotionally.The walkathon is an effort to raise awareness on not only the physical needs of the senior citizens, but also the emotional needs.One event might not be able to change the mindset of people suddenly, but we realise it’s important to send the message urgently,” he says.
