New Delhi: Union Cabinet on Thursday has agreed to the participation of India as the 'Guest of Honour' country in the next year's Frankfurt Book Fair, the biggest book event in the world.
It would cost the public exchequer around Rs 20 crore to project India's image through a mutifaceted display of its books, art, culture and academic achievements, the government
said.
The state-run publisher Naional Book Trust of India (NBT) has been designated as the nodal agency for organising the Indian participation. A large delegation of NBT officials and publishers were in Frankfurt last month for this year's book fair.
A theme pavilion, exhibition of books, readings by desi authors and even screening of Bollywood films would boost the 'Guest of Honour' status.
Indian food and alternative medicine, which have spawned an industry abroad, will be displayed at the fair. There will be an exhibition on Ayurveda as well as various food festivals. An
exhibition of Indian paintings, sculpture and handicrafts will represent the country at the venue.
The Cabinet also decided to set up a Translation Fund under the NBT to help publishers, especially smaller German publishers, launch works of Indian authors in German.
