The Dutch Suicide
The Dutch Suicide
Follow us:WhatsappFacebookTwitterTelegram.cls-1{fill:#4d4d4d;}.cls-2{fill:#fff;}Google NewsChildren in Holland do not put their finger in a dike to save their town anymore but talk about the land of death. This March a Dutch girl at a school in Enschede, committed suicide. Enschede is a city in the northeastern province of Overijssel on the German border. And the suicide and the town would have probably gone unnoticed if not for some friends of the girl. All of them were taking part in a game of suicide. The report first came out in a newspaper in Holland. All these girls, 12 to 15 year old were texting each other in a game of dare, urging each other to committ suicide through their cellphones and on the internet. The vicious cycle of this suicide game was broken when one of the girls who was being egged on to commit suicide got scared and informed her parents. The panic spread in the city and the Dutch are worried about why and how could the urge to die, and that too in a game of dare, get into the mind of the 12 year olds.

The suicide game reminded me of the Hollywood movie, Blair Witch Project, in a weird way. It's a movie set in October of 1994, when three student filmmakers disappear in the woods near Burkittsville, Maryland while shooting a documentary. A year later their footage was found. And then the film begins. True that the film has nothing to do with the Dutch suicide game. But probably the panic element gets both of them on the same platform. In Blair Witch Project, what stays on your mind, is the panic and the element of being stalked. Stalked by something or someone that no one understands what. Same with the Dutch suicides. 12 to 15 year old girls texting each other and pushing the limits when it comes to playing a game of death. And there is an element of death that stalks you throughout. Morbid, scary and sad. And yet somehow the human mind wants to know more about it.

This report comes out at a time when scientists in the US are trying to use Video games as a serious medicine in the battle against cancer, depression, well, almost everything. In this drive to put Video Games in the US medicine chest, Americans have designed an animated heroine "Roxxi," billed as "a gutsy, fully armed nanobot that seeks out and destroys cancer cells throughout the human body. HopeLab, the group behind the project hopes to spread to at least 55 countries. So when Roxxi goes to Holland or hops across few states to Maryland, will it stop the 12 year olds from their game of death or will it take away the panic of being stalked, like in Blair Witch project? Probably it's a bit too late for a turnaround. While there is Roxxii, the machine that takes over the mind, there is also Google and a quick search on the interent will lead you to, a Guide to Suicide. "Don't shoot yourself, don't jump from a very high place. These are unreliable techniques and will have terrible effects on the survivor" Don't kill yourself over this blog. Not worth it.
