A big solar event is about to happen and will impact the entire solar system, including Earth. According to NASA's calculations the sun's vast magnetic field is about to flip and in August NASA said that it could happen in three to four months from then, which means the event could take place any time now.
"This change will have ripple effects throughout the solar system," says solar physicist Todd Hoeksema of Stanford University.
According to NASA, the reversal of the sun's magnetic field is a big event as the heliosphere - domain of the sun's magnetic influence - extends billions of kilometers beyond Pluto.
The sun's magnetic field changes polarity approximately every 11 years and is a part of the regular solar cycle. The sun's polar magnetic fields weaken, go to zero and then emerge again with the opposite polarity. It happens at the peak of each solar cycle as the sun's inner magnetic dynamo re-organises itself.
