Srinagar: The Omar Abdullah government in Jammu and Kashmir is under pressure from the Centre over the infant deaths. Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad visited the GB Pant Hospital in Srinagar, which is the city's only paediatric facility. This is where around 360 newborns have died since January due to shortage of medical staff and equipment.
Azad slammed the Omar Abdullah government claiming it had not spent funds from the Rs 60 crore lying with it for the past two years. "The scheme has been introduced a year ago. We gave the state Rs 60 crore this year to implement the scheme. The scheme must be put into action immediately. New nurses and doctors must be hired as well," Azad said.
After CNN-IBN's continuous coverage, the Omar Abdullah government did allocate funds for extra staff and equipment. However, the Opposition has been crying foul and demanding a CBI probe.
