Speaker assures probe into Ranchi Lake boat mishap

Jharkhand Assembly Speaker Shashank Sekhar Bhokta on Tuesday said the government would ensure an inquiry into the boat mishap in Ranchi Lake which claimed four lives and Tourism Secretary Sajal Chakraborty had a narrow escape.

"It is very sad that the mishap occurred. The government will ensure a probe and also ensure such mishaps are not repeated," Bhokta said in the House after the Opposition expressed concern over lack of safety measures at the lake in Ranchi.

Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (Prajatantrik) Legislature Party leader Pradip Kumar Yadav drew attention of the chair to a newspaper report on the tragedy.

Joining the issue, former Assembly Speaker and BJP MLA C P Singh said the lake had no professional divers and locals from the Hindpiri locality should be thanked for saving many precious lives. "There should be life jackets and divers at the lake," Singh added.

Fourteen persons, including the tourism secretary, were in the motor boat when it capsised on Sunday, leaving four dead.
