THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The city-based Society for Promotion of Alternative Computing and Employment (SPACE) has been invited to be part of the international network of FLOSS competence centres. It becomes the ninth such centre globally. The decision to include SPACE in the network was taken during the FLOSS competence centres summit, held in Paris during September 22-24.  The FLOSS network is a worldwide network of individual FLOSS competence centres that act in their geographical regions to promote the use and the quality of FLOSS in multiple areas of society, including industry, academia etc. The centres are organised in a network as a means to exchange experiences, best practices and collaborate on specific tasks.  SPACE has been playing a very important role in building free software capabilities in Kerala. It had an instrumental role in many of the successful free software initiatives in Kerala, including IT@School project, insight programme for the disabled and free software initiatives, including computerisation of Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB).     “By joining this international network, we expect to share its expertise and knowledge with similar organisations in other parts of the world and to bring their expertise back to India,” said a press release.
