A National Social Work framework for a new curriculum will be presented to the Planning Commission in February, said Dr Vimala Nadkarni, president of the International Association of Schools of Social Work on Thursday.
Speaking on the sidelines of the International Study Conference on ‘Transnational Social Work: Opportunites and Challenges,’ at the Madras Christian College here, she said, “Under the aegis of the International Association of Schools of Social work, we have formed five zonal task force committees, which are working to develop contextual curriculum for the social work discipline across the country.”
The five zones include North, South, East, West and North East and the Zonal task force is represented by the social work fraternity, mostly from the academia, Nadkarni added. Each zonal task force committee will have 10 members headed by a person and work on developing a new curriculum on core areas of social work and on evolving social issues. Some of the regional evolving issues pertaining to the particular zone will also be looked into and studied to develop a curriculum, Nadkarni pointed out.
“With globalisation sweeping the country and an increase in developmental issues, it is important that the social work curriculum needs to be reinvented and stay relevant,” said Nadkarni. There are 340 social work institutions across India, she added.
