Security of Kakkanad Girls Home to be beefed up

KOCHI: A master plan has been prepared by the district administration to beef up the security of the Government Girls Home in Kakkanad, where victims of the Paravoor, Varapuzha and other sex scams are being housed.District Collector P I Sheik Pareeth said the master plan will be submitted to the government before January 15 for approval.“The master plan has been prepared taking into account the loopholes in the security. As a first step, the compound of the juvenile home will be fenced with barbed wires,” he said. Once the project gets approval, the girls’ home will be totally revamped. “The vastness of the compound of the girls’ home is one of the major factors affecting its security.The area which has been lying idle will be made use of,” he said. As per the master plan, various training centres will be built in the compound for the inmates. “We are planning to open computer labs, vocational training centres and a library. An amount to the tune of Rs 10 crore has been earmarked for the project,” said Sheik Pareeth.Though the Social Welfare Department has started to rebuild the collapsed compound wall, it is progressing at a snail’s pace. Earlier, realising the gravity of the situation, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy had asked the district administration to tighten the security of the Government Girls Home, Kakkanad.
