Say no to fine and yes to helmets
The event was the inaugural of the Helmet Awareness Campaign by the Tamil Nadu Police Traffic Wardens Organisation, a campaign that was conducted in at least three other places in the city.

The ashen-faced motorists caught at a traffic signal on Kamarajar Salai, near the Mahatma Gandhi statue, on Saturday for helmet-less ride would have least expected ACP (Traffic) Sanjay Arora to be also present. They would not have expected to be asked to sign a declaration to abhor helmet-less riding, and in turn, be presented with a helmet.

The event was the inaugural of the Helmet Awareness Campaign by the Tamil Nadu Police Traffic Wardens Organisation, a campaign that was conducted in at least three other places in the city. Speaking on the occasion, the ACP said that the need of the hour was to spread awareness of the importance of wearing helmets. “The percentage of two-wheeler riders wearing helmets is very small, which is a cause for concern,” he added.

Volunteers of the Road Safety Patrol, in their resplendent white dresses, maroon-coloured berets and blue arm badges, helped in placing the helmets to auto rickshaws that were dispatched to different parts of the city. A traffic inspector informed Express that about 50 helmets would be distributed for free as part of the campaign.

Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Ravi Kumar, Chief Traffic Warden Harish L Mehta and D D Singh, zonal manager of Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) - which had sponsored the helmets - too, were present, as were employees of the insurance company.
