Setting a landmark in journalism education, the Malayalam Department of Bharat Mata College (BMC), Thrikkakara, launched an internet television ‘Channel BMC’ on Thursday.
Minister for Rural Development and Culture K C Joseph inaugurated the first-of-its-kind venture by any arts and science college in the state.
Hundreds of former students of the Malayalam Department also gathered to witness the fulfillment of their long-cherished dream.
In his inaugural speech, the Minister said the venture has become a role model to other institutions in the state.
“Such initiatives will help students become socially-responsible journalists. The college is giving a message to other institutions on how to utilise the UGC fund efficiently,” he said.
The channel was developed with the help of 25 students, supported by former students placed in various media organisations. “They took six months to complete the work. The channel is aired in the regional language and is controlled by the students of the Malayalam Department,” said Josy Joseph, the Malayalam Department Head.
“When I discussed about the concept with the students, they responded with great enthusiasm. The channel will help the students be more practical-oriented with students going out of classrooms with the camera. Moreover, many relevant issues can be discussed and documentaries aired to create awareness on social issues,” he said.
He said the channel was developed using free software and zero investment. “UGC funds were utilised for bettering the lab with better cameras and editing material,” Josy said. Former students Mahesh Nair, Sijin Vincent and Sarath Chandran M B are the technical consultants. People can download Channel BMC from www.channelbmc.wordpress.com.
MOSA launched
During the occasion, Malayalam Old Students Association (MOSA) was inaugurated by the Minister K C Joseph.
The Minister said the state government would try to start the media city project in the current fiscal.
