BANGALORE: Among the many recognitions that Dr K S Yagnik, a 75-year-old retired Scientist from National Aeronautics Limited has received, the one that he got in the form of a certificate from chief election commissioner Dr S Y Quraishi on Monday inspired the people around him to do what he has been doing for the society.Though he slogged for more than 100 hours visiting the households in the vicinity to update the voter list in Shantinagar, Yagnik humbly said, “I initially thought that I am too old to do such things. But, I did not want to disappoint two young men who approached me to join them in this service and the cause has inspired me. I have done my bit and it is up to the people in the city to do theirs.”According to Yagnik he had to visit each household at least twice — once to give the application forms and the second time to collect them. He had to visit some households many times as they had not filled the forms correctly. Though it was an arduous task for a 75-year-old man, the entire excise was meaningful and as he was doing it to improve the society, which is improving the voter turnout to make democracy more successful. Like Yagnik, 304 other from all age groups slogged for days together to distribute and gather 44,218 applications. Eventually, it resulted in updating the voter list in the seven wards of Shantinagar Assembly constituency by 100 per cent. In the process, around 20,000 new names were added, 10,000 names of people, who were dead or had migrated, were deleted and 4,000 entries were corrected. Now, Shantinagar Assembly Constituency has 2.1 lakh registered voters.
