Readerspeak: KANK disappoints
The response to KANKis far from encouraging, or that's what audience feedback in the first week suggest.

New Delhi: Karan Johar has returned to the director's chair after four-and-a-half years of trying his hand at various things - talk shows, producing films, writing screenplays and designing costumes - but this time, the response to his new movie is far from encouraging, or that is what the audience feedback from the first week of his film suggest.

While critics may be touting Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna as the biggest hit of the year and the industry is going gaga over the movie, the audience is less than enthused.

These are some opinions that readers expressed over the movie on IBNLive.

Says a reader, Kaveri, "I would consider movies like Murder, which are also based on extra marital affairs, ten times better than this dreadfully long and lavish saga. KANK is not even comparable to Yash Chopra's Silsila which is beautifully crafted and very natural. Its high time Karan Johar realises that movie making is not just about casting his friends who happen to be big stars and making them wear flashy clothes and dance to loud music in expensive sets. A script is a must."

Another reader Rahul says, "It's only because the movie has big stars who have a huge number of fans that the movie is still in theatres. Despite being a huge Shah Rukh Khan fan, I was disappointed with the movie. It's hilarious in the first half but everything is taken away if you watch the second half."

The moview disappoints and hugely at that - that is the verdict of most of the people who saw the movie.

A reader, Iqbal, writes on IBNLive, "At best the movie only deserves two stars since the reasons for infidelity were wafer thin. The problems were something that most couples encounter and manage to sort out without much ado. Also the characterisation was imperfect sparing Abhishek, who was consistent throughout the movie."

"How can Amitabh's character think of correcting others when his own life is so skewed ? His justification for leading an amorous lifestyle (which Karan Johar wants us to believe is humorous) was ridiculous. Unlike all other Karan movies this one failed to move me, it only succeeded in moving me out of the theatre in relief when the saga ended," adds he.

And most people admit that they had trouble understanding the kind of people Rani Mukherji and Shah Rukh Khan played in the movie.

Says another reader Flavia, "I couldn’t understand Rani and Shah Rukh's characters in the movie. I didn't understand why Rani wasn't happy about her marriage and why was it so easy for her to look outside her marriage. Extramarital affairs are taboo in Indian society but what pushed Rani? You can't just sleep around."

She adds that it was difficult to believe that someone as frustrated as Shah Rukh's character was in KANK would be happy with another woman and also it was impossible that the characters did not try and do anything to sustain their marriages.

"It almost seems that they were simply bored and wanted out. The movie made a mockery of marriage and made an infidelity an 'in' thing," says Flavia.

And then there were readers like Mohammad Ali who believe that the film was nothing but a personal milestone for Karan Johar.

"The film was a failure on all fronts," writes Ali.

Somehow, most audiences expected Shah Rukh in a better role and expected the movie to be more full of life. Audiences are feeling that with great actors, ample money and the best of sets, choreographers and designers, Karan Johar should have tried to create something more meaningful and entertaining.
