KOCHI: The ongoing ‘Malayalam Bhasha Varacharanam’, celebrated as a part of the Kerala Day, is also an event to delve into the essence and charm of Malayalam language and the changing outlook towards it. Here, the discussions slowly unfold Kerala’s rich heritage and tradition. The event encompasses the beauty of the land, the changing landscapes, socio-political transformation and the life of its people embedded in the tomes of literature.The seven-day event organised by the Samasta Kerala Sahitya Parishad was inaugurated on Tuesday by M G S Narayanan at G Auditorium. He said that the status of a classical language is something that is to be won as it can neither be obtained through lies nor as a gift. The government should support the stand of those contributing to it, he added. The discussion on Tuesday centred on Malayalam language, literature and society. The language and literature are like mirrors to life and those who do not study them will not be able to appreciate the beauty of the nature, said Sara Joseph. She lamented that in the era of globalisation, the language is losing its purity. The new trends in novel writing were discussed on Wednesday. Sethu inaugurated the session and K P Ramanunni presided over it. The evolution of novel has seen many new trends. But when we look back at these, the new turns are hardly received by the readers of the said era. It is sad to note that it is only in later years that people accept the trend. Readers should look into the changing trends with a deep insight, said Sethu. “Though many were against my modern novels, I too have dealt with life,” he added. Modern short story writing of today’s time, will be discussed on Thursday. C Radhakrishnan will inaugurate the session and Vaisakan will preside over it. Sreekumaran Thampy will inaugurate the session on new trends in poetry on Friday. P K Rajasekharan will preside over the function. Saturday will be devoted to literary criticism. Balachandran Chullikad will inaugurate the session and Thomas Mathew will preside over it. Professional Drama is the topic for Sunday. The session to conclude on Monday will revolve around media, language and culture and will be inaugurated by N P Rajendran.
