BANGALORE: The students of psychiatric nursing department of T John college recently conducted a rally against drug abuse and illicit trafficking from Beggur PHC to Bommanahalli. Their aim was to create awareness against drug abuse, smoking, alcoholism, and use of tobacco amongst local people. Students from Msc, PBBSc. second year, and third year BSc, participated in the rally. The rally was led by Josephine Cynthia Msc, psychiatry HOD, Saju John and Joel Singh, faculties of T John College. Sambasivan P, campus director of T John college said, “Teenagers and young adults are particularly vulnerable to using illicit drugs. The prevalence of drug use among young people is more than twice as high as that among the general population. At this age, peer pressure to experiment with illicit drugs can be strong and self-esteem is often low. Also, those who take drugs tend to be either misinformed or insufficiently aware of the health risks involved. We are trying to communicate that the destructive effects of illicit drugs concerns us all.”He further added, “The aim of the rally was to create awareness amongst the young people and others to educate themselves about the health risks associated with illicit drug use.”The T John Group of Institutions was founded in 1988 by the former Minister of Karnataka state for infrastructure development and aviation T John. His son Dr Thomas, after completing his MBBS from M S Ramaiah College, decided to run the college in 1993. He is the present chairman of the Institution.
