VELLORE: Officials of the prison and police departments had a tough time persuading Robert Pius and Jayakumar, the two life convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, to shift them to the Puzhal Prison from Vellore Central Prison for Men on Tuesday, said a senior police officer in the district.Robert Pius (44) and Jayakumar (49), who were accused in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, have been in life imprisonment here since 1998. They shared the cell with death convicts - Murugan (alias) Sriharan, Shanthan and Perarivalan in the high risk prisoners’ block (H) since 1998. The five convicts have the luxury of vessels and rations to prepare their own food, a small gym with equipment and shuttlecock court inside their block, said sources in the prison. On Monday night, prison officials received an official communication from the authorities higher up to transfer the two life convicts to Puzhal Prison, which is on the outskirts of Chennai. As the prison officials prepared to shift Pius and Jayakumar before dawn on Tuesday, the duo became reluctant to leave their cell mates at the last minute. “It took nearly two hours to convince the two to cooperate with us to shift them to Puzhal prison. It delayed the original plan of the prison department by two to three hours. At last, the duo was handed to the police team at around 8 am on Tuesday and they finally reached Puzhal Prison at 10.45 am,” added the officer.
