CHENNAI: The Thamizhaga Cable TV Operators' General Welfare Association, on Friday, announced that 10,000 of its members from across the State would go on a fast in the city on June 7 to protest Sun TV network's sudden move of raising its charges for the Sun bouquet of channels. The association further urged the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) Government to put an end to the SCV (Sun Cable Vision) monopoly over the cable TV business in the State . At the association's executive committee meeting held in Chennai, 272 of its office bearers from across Tamil Nadu unanimously decided to go on a fast in the city on June 7 to condemn the Sun TV network's move of suddenly increasing charges of the Sun bouquet of channels by 25 per cent.
"Even as the AIADMK government is taking steps to introduce Arasu Cable TV aimed at streamlining the cable TV operations in the State, the Sun TV network has increased the sub bouquet charges from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 2.5 lakh per month," said P Sakilan, State president of the association. When the floor was opened to the officer bearers to express their grievances, many complained about SCV forcefully taking over a Multi System Operator (MSO) run by independent cable TV operators. Tamilan, Theni district president of the association, claimed that in Theni, an "SCV man" who runs Akash Cable TV network, had completely taken control of an MSO started by independent persons who invested crores of rupees. The association also passed another resolution demanding the transfer of certain police officers who are part of the antipiracy wing of the police department, as they claimed SCV had used them to file false complaints against cable TV operators. The resolution urged the government to appoint neutral officers in the wing. The association also welcomed the new government and requested an audience to hear out the cable TV operators' ideas before implementing Arasu cable TV in the State.
