THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Corporation would offer one-per cent tax concession for residences where pipe-compost units are set up for waste disposal, Mayor K Chandrika has said. During her post-budget briefing here on Monday, the Mayor also said that the property tax would be hiked in the near future. ‘’The hike follows a government order. A maximum of 60-per cent increase will be made for residences and the tax for commercial buildings would be higher,’’ she said. ‘’Rather than a hike, it would be more of a unification of taxes,’’ Deputy Mayor G Happykumar said. ‘’Several areas will witness a fall in the taxes. The assessment will actually be made by the owner, which will be inspected and verified by the Corporation officials,’’ he said. ‘’The plinth area of the building and other facilities like road accessibility will be the determining factors,’’ he added. The Corporation has performed well during the last financial year, though it faced several challenges, said the Mayor. The Vilappilsala issue had consumed much manpower of the Corporation. She also said that the Corporation was waiting for the High Court verdict on the issue.
