BANGALORE: To help the farmers adopt better methods to manage water and energy demand, Enzen, a Bangalore-based firm has conceptualised a new initiative, ‘Project Wildflower’.Dr Uma Rajarathnam, chief, Clean Energy and Environment Practice, Enzen Global Solutions Private Limited, said “We have started the pilot project in Doddballapur. If the project proves to be successful, we will implement it on PAN India basis.”“The water-energy nexus is a critical issue for the farmers across the country. Realising this fact, we have begun this project to reduce the total quantum of energy consumption which would also reduce the cost for farmers” she said. The pilot project at Doddballapur covers an area of about 30 kms, covering about 604 farmers, who primarily grow grapes, ragi, among others. A team of about 10-15 members, with five core people from Enzen are working for the project. Uma said, “The model consists of activities, methods and technologies that would influence consumer behaviour and modify farmers’ consumption patterns.”“At the project site we are replacing the age-old existing pump system with energy efficient certified model water pumps. Suitable depths for these pumps are being selected before installation. This system reduces the amount of power, as well as water requirements,” she added.Besides saving energy cost, it also enhances good farming practices. In addition, it will also bring down the migration of farmers from rural areas to urban areas.
