PUDUCHERRY: While election time was a period of intense activity for politicians, for rowdies and thugs, it was a period of relative inactivity with the many bans in place against notorious gangsters. But now, inter-gang rivalry is slowly rearing its ugly head again. The recent twin murders of a man and son, which happened in broad daylight, would once again make Puducherry residents uneasy. It had become the norm for gangs to hide in the Union Territory after committing crimes and other anti-social activities. During election time, the administration had banned many gangsters from entering Puducherry. In fact, timely detection of a notorious anti-social element had thwarted his effort to earn a ticket of a political party to contest the elections. After the election results, a known gangster was attacked in Purusukuppam, when two country bombs were thrown at him. But he survived without any injury. The government of N Rangasamy now has its work cut out for it. The people expect the CM, who himself would be handling the home portfolio, and the police department to act tough against these rowdy elements and gangsters so that the residents of the Union Territory may live in peace.
