THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A brand new year is at the doorstep. It is that time of the year when 365 days of stress, strain and hard work come to an end, when people look at the balance sheet of the days that passed by and take count of the milestones achieved and opportunities missed and also set new goals with hope and aspiration for the coming year. Incidentally, it is also a time when the State Beverages Corporation and other liquor sellers achieve new milestones in terms of sales figures, thanks to the vast number of tipplers in our society. But the police have decided to play party poopers for the tipplers who do not intend to keep their celebrations under control this year. ‘’Keep your celebrations indoors or face the consequences. Drunk motorists will not be shown any mercy, if caught by the police,’’ is the message from the police to tipplers. The City Police have arranged tight security arrangements in the city on the new year’s eve, with special focus on Kovalam, Vizhinjam and Shangumugham. As usual, the prime focus of the police will be on the roads. There will be vehicle checking at over 200 different spots in the city to nab drunk drivers. Speed radars and breath-analysers will be used during the checking. Barricades and speed breakers will be installed on all major roads to check road rage, a common practice during every new year celebrations, which usually lead to fatal accidents.Stringent action will be taken against drunk drivers who land in the hands of the police. As many as 1,500 officials, including uniformed officers, those in mufti, women officials and shadow police have been assigned at Kovalam beach alone. The beach will be under the close watch of temporarily installed surveillance cameras. A special control room will be operational on the beach to monitor the images captured by the cameras. On Shangumgham beach, 200 policemen, supervised by two Assistant Commissioners and three Circle Inspectors, will be on duty. The service of the Bomb Detection Squad has also been made available here, owing to its proximity to the Thiruvananthapuram International Airport. The police have also sent out a message to all the hotels throwing new year parties not to switch off the lights at any point in order to avoid untoward incidents. A case will be registered against the hotel owners who do not comply. The local people can also forward the images of crimes that they capture on their mobile phones to the e-mails, [email protected] or [email protected]. They can also utilise the emergency services of the police at the numbers, 100 (control room), 1090 (crime stopper), 1091 (women’s helpline) or 1099 (traffic helpline).
