Heavy deployment of police prevented RJD MLA Dinesh Kumar Singh from carrying out his threat to immolate himself on the Independence Day over his demand that the state government should declare drought in Bihar.

Singh, already on a hunger strike since August 11 and forcibly admitted to Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) by the police, had made public his intentions on Wednesday about immolating himself. "We had been maintaining a tight vigil since then. The moment he came out in the morning with kerosene oil, matchsticks and a poster regarding his demands, our men snatched the objects, lifted him up and put him back on his bed in the hospital," said a police officer.

"He had intended to march to the Gandhi Maidan where the Independence Day celebrations were scheduled and set himself on fire," the officer said. Singh, an MLA from the Jagdishpur constituency in Bhojpur district of Bihar, has not been allowed to move since then.

He, however, sent messages to reporters that he would conduct a blast at the Chief Minister's official residence once he is set free. "This government is neither concerned about the problems of farmers, nor talking about them peacefully. I will now conduct a blast at the CM House," Singh told PTI over phone.
