THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: “Water hit the tin sheet roof like a heavy downpour. Soon, waves gushed into the house like a tsunami attack. Luckily, it occurred before we had gone to sleep, otherwise...” Murukamma, whose house was almost destroyed in the pipe-burst near Vazhayala, could not complete her words. She could not control her tears and searched for words to describe her sorrow. Not just Murukamma, the houses of her two neighbours were also damaged by the water that gushed out after the pipeline carrying water from Aruvikkara to the city suddenly burst on Sunday night.Of the three main supply lines, the one to the Observatory Hills reservoir that caters to the need of the areas in the heart of the city was the one that burst around 10 pm.The residents near the pipeline said water rose up in air like a spring around 25 feet high and plummeted over Murukamma’s house."Water first banged on the tin roof over the kitchen. When I opened the back door, it was a chilling sight. Water came gushing in and we immediately closed the back door and escaped through the front door. In a couple of seconds, water gushed in through the back door and the tiled roof. Within no time, it washed away all the valuables and drowned the house completely. Now what is left are the four damaged walls of the house,” she said. But the really sad fact is that Murukamma’s father Viswanath, who was recently discharged from hospital after amputation of both his legs, was severely injured in the incident. Unnikrishnan, Viswanath’s son, while carrying his father on his shoulders, slipped outside the house. The stitch on Viswanath’s amputated leg got drenched and Viswanath has been readmitted to the Medical College Hospital. The houses of Murukan and Mohanan were also partially damaged in the mishap.Selvarajan, son-in-law of Murukamma, said ornaments, cash and electronic equipment were washed away into the Killiyar river.
