Patna/New Delhi: A day after shocking images of a woman being allegedly molested on the streets of Patna in full view of a muted public and police officers, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has cracked the whip.
The state government has transferred several top police officials in the city. However, Nitish Kumar played down the arrests.
“They were just routine transfers,” he said.
Only the main accused in the case, Rakesh, has been arrested so far. The other men who joined in the assault still remain at large.
Patna DIG, G S Gangwar, who has now been transferred, had claimed the police is doing its best
“We have registered three FIRs, one against the person who assaulted her and two against the hotel owners under the immoral trafficking act,” he said.
While law may be progressing at its own pace, the anger over the incident has spread like wildfire. India is reacting, not just against the attack, but also against those who stood by, as this woman's modesty was being outraged
“I'm a common girl. It frightens me in the sense that if such a thing happens with me no one is going to help me,” says a girl
“More stringent laws should be made and capital punishment should be given for the same,” says another.
It’s a demand mirrored by the National Women's Commission
“As far as molestation and eve teasing are concerned laws are very, very weak and that's why we have suggested that there should be a separate law that is sexual assault bill that we have proposed and sent to the government. We have suggested that the definition of rape should be changed. Even molestation should come under laws meant for rape,” says NCW chairperson, Girija Vyas.
