TITLAGARH: Paralysed and bed-ridden, she looks older than her age of 45.Deserted by her husband Hemanta, Sukanti Puta of Colonypada under Kamerimunda gram panchayat is silently awaiting death. A single room IAY house with just a cot and some utensils are all that she has. With Sukanti being confined to her bed for the last four months the room too has turned into a toilet. Stink and flies have made the house unfit for stay.Her suffering began when Hemanta deserted her for another woman. As he refused to let her stay in his house, she was forced to move out and resorted to begging for a living. She took shelter at the verandah of a local school. With no one else in the family, she started taking ill due to loneliness. Her life took a new turn after widower Dabal Majhi of the same village proposed to her. But her problems were far from over. More ordeal awaited her. Dabal and Sukanti’s relationship was unacceptable to the villagers which imposed a fine of Rs 6,000 on them. The couple’s failure to pay the fine saw them ostracised. Soon, Sukanti was diagnosed with paralysis and Dabal too found it convenient to desert her. Today, she is completely bed-ridden and there is none to attend to her.A local NGO had drawn the attention of the district administration, the sarpanch, ICDS, BDO and the cops but none has come to her rescue. The only silver lining is that the administration provided her an IAY house four months back. The local anganwadi centre provides her rice and dal while she goes to bed without dinner daily.The Medical Officer of Turekela Primary Health Centre had initially provided her medical care, but it was stopped after a few days as she needs to be hospitalised and an attendant.Turekela BDO Bijay Kumar Kuanr said he was aware of Sukanti’s condition and measures had been initiated to provide her with treatment. A medical team had visited her on Saturday.
