The repair and restoration work of the stormwater drain that caved in at the busy Punjagutta on Friday morning was severely hampered on Saturday due to heavy flow of sewage water that has been let into the stormwater drain illegally even as traffic jams continued for the second day in the area.
Officials, in fact, blamed the sewage that has been diverted to the stormwater drain partly responsible for the road collapse as it kept the under soil wet even when there was no rain resulting in the weakening of the slab.
Due to the closure of the road and traffic diversion, motorists and pedestrians had a miserable time moving between Ameerpet and Khairatabad junctions. The unbearable stink from the pumped out sewage water that pervaded the whole area only added to their woes.
Traffic jams stretched up to two km on either side of the road as the traffic police diverted all the vehicles, including RTC buses, between Khairatabad and Punjagutta.
GHMC engineer-in-chief R Dhan Singh told Express that they could restore only a portion of the damaged area as the work was hampered by overflowing sewage.
"Till afternoon we could not plug the flow of sewage. Only after arresting the flow, further restoration can be taken up. We are draining out the sewage water and also trying to identify the place from where it is coming," he said. Sudden rain in the evening made matters worse.
