Batting legend and former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has warned Rohit Sharma-led Team India against taking Bangladesh lightly in the upcoming two-match Test series. India will face Bangladesh in two red-ball matches in September 2024. The series opener is scheduled to take place at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai from September 19, and Green Park Stadium will host the second Test from September 27 onwards.
According to Gavaskar, who has now donned the hat of an expert and commentator, after getting the better of Pakistan in a two-match Test series, the Bangladeshi team will be high on confidence, and they have some quality players in their ranks who can trouble India.
“By beating Pakistan in both the Test matches played in Pakistan, the Bangladesh team have shown that they are a force to reckon with. Even a couple of years back, when India toured Bangladesh, they were given a good fight by the Bangladeshis. Now with the series win against Pakistan under their belt, they are primed to take on India too,” Gavaskar wrote in his column for Mid-Day.
“They have some fine players in their ranks and some new promising players who no longer have the awe of the opposition that seemed to characterise their early forays into the international game. Now, every team that play them know they can’t put their guard down as they could be knocked down, as the Pakistanis found out. It will certainly be a series to look forward to,” he added.
India and Bangladesh have faced each other 13 times in Test cricket so far, and on 11 occasions, India has managed to get the better of their Asian rivals. Bangladesh, which suffered a 0-2 defeat in the last Test series played between the two teams in December 2022, would like to end the 24-year-long wait of securing its first-ever Test win over India.
The Najmul Hossain Shanto-led India arrived in India on Sunday (September 15) and attended its first training session at the iconic Chepauk Stadium on Monday.
