Opium at Jaswant's party? Court orders probe
The BJP leader's son says opium use is not illegal in Rajasthan.

New Delhi: A special narcotics court in Jodhpur on Monday directed the Rajasthan Police to investigate allegations of opium use against senior BJP leader Jaswant Singh.

A resident of Jasol village had filed a complaint against Singh under the Narcotic Drugs Act alleging Singh served opium at a private party in the village.

The villager alleged Singh welcomed guests to a function at his ancestral home last week by offering them opium diluted in water.

However, Singh denied the charge and said it was saffron - used to flavour the drinks – and not opium.

The local Congress unit has demanded that Singh be disqualified from the Rajya Sabha, and has called for an independent inquiry against him.

The court has not given a time-frame for the investigation.

Ironically, Singh's son Manvendra Singh defended the practice of serving opium at parties in an exclusive interview to CNN-IBN.

“The government of Rajasthan has an annual theka (quota) for opium. It's not illegal in Rajasthan,” he said.
