New Delhi: The Government on Tuesday rejected BJP's demand for re-enactment of Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA) saying the law had failed to contain terror acts.

The Centre also announced the raising of 300 additional batallions of Central forces to strengthen security.

"We will face the problem of terrorism but not indulge in human rights violations," home minister Shivraj Patil said in Lok Sabha while intervening on an adjournment motion, spearheaded by leader of opposition, L K Advani, on the Mumbai blasts.

The motion was rejected by a voice vote after Advani said he did not want to press for division and led an opposition walk-out expressing dissatisfaction over the home minister's intervention.

Regarding the day-long debate, Advani said, "The question now is what hereafter? In view of even Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's statement that the attack on India's economic power-house was aided and abetted from across the border".

Patil said POTA had been misused more often than it had been able to stop terror acts.
