DHENKANAL: Basic amenities remain elusive to vendors at the markets from Baji square to Rathgada square and Ganesh Bazaar to Bus stand area. There is no vending zone, water and rest shed facilities for them even as the rising temperature continues to make life hell. The hapless vendors, many of whom come from interior pockets of the district to sell their wares, have no other option but to sit under the sun till evening.A mango-seller Kumusi Nayak sits at the Rathgada square. Although vendors like her pay Rs 10 to 20 daily to the local civic body for providing them basic amenities, there is no drinking water provision in the market, let alone a rest shed.Official sources said the civic body gets Rs 8 lakh per annum from these vendors. As the National Vendors Policy is yet to be implemented in the district, no survey of vendors has been undertaken yet.As per reports, the municipality had constructed a vending zone in an unplanned manner at the cost of Rs 4 lakh near the Court Road. It has remained unoccupied for two years now. As the zone was constructed without consulting the vendors who wanted it near the Stadium area, none has shown interest in occupying the outlets.Municipal Executive Officer Subhas Jena admitted that the vending zone had remained unused since inauguration due to faulty planning. He said the municipality had planned to convert it to a fruit market, but there are no takers.
