THIRUVANANATHAPURAM: The Munchira Matom here will get a new Pushpanjali Swamiyar on Monday. The preliminary vaidic rites and rituals in connection with the installation of the Swamiyar, who will have the right to perform Pushpanjali to Lord Sree Padmanabha, will begin on Sunday. The new Swamiyar, Thirumaleswaran Potty, 75, will receive Sanyasa Deeksha (attaining the status of a Sanyasi) before assuming the title and he will remain near the abode of Lord Sree Padmanabha Swamy for the rest of his life. The position of Munchira Matom Swamiyar was being temporarily held by Sankarananda Brahmananda Bhoothi after the demise of Choozhikunnam Swamiyar who attained Samadhi in 2004.The position remained vacant since then as it was difficult to find a person to don the mantle of Swamiyar, said Munchira Matom manager Kanyakulangara Subramanian Potty. Birth in a noble Brahmin family, Vedadhikara (the right to recite the Vedas and to perform the Vedic rites) and Yagadhikara (the right to perform yagas) were some among them, he said.Talking to Express, Thirumaleswaran Potty said that he viewed the ascension to the Swamiyar position as the blessing of Lord Sree Padmanabha. “It is the result of the virtuous deeds of a generation to which I belong. This will be the most worthwhile phase in my life,” he said. The Swamiyars of Munchira Matom and Naduvil Matom conduct the Pushpanjali ritual at the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple in turn for six months each. The Pushpanjali by the Swamiyar, held between 7.30 a.m. and 8.30 a.m. everyday, is considered as most auspicious because of its deep spiritual significance. The two-day rituals in the Adi Sankaracharya tradition will be held in the presence of Azhvancherry Thambrakkal, the supreme head of the Nampoothiri Brahmins in the state. On Sunday, the rituals will begin at 8 a.m. with the Swamiyar-designate performing the Oupasanakriya at which he snaps all ties with the worldly life. Sanyasayachana (seeking permission from gurus), krichram (expiation of sins), jeeva sradhamoottu (performing the after-death rituals of one’s own) and Deeksha Kshouram (tonsuring) are among the rituals that follow. On Monday morning, the rituals will begin with the Swamiyar-designate taking a dip in the nearby pond and climbing the steps as a ‘Digambara’ to leave for the Himalayas. A ‘Gruhasthashrami’ will prevent him from going on the pilgrimage and tell him to stay at the abode of Lord Sree Padmanabhaswamy and to bless the people here. The Gruhasthashrami will also present a saffron-coloured mundu to the Swamiyar-designate. Only the ‘Othikkan’, the ‘Vaidikan’ and the ‘Gruhasthashrami’ are allowed to witness this ritual. Later, they will walk to the Rangavilasom Palace near the temple to perform the other rituals. The new swamiyar will perform Pushpanjali to Lord Sree Padmanabha, the presiding deity of the Sree Padmanabhaswamy temple, on November 17.
