BANGALORE: Housing Minister V Somanna has said that a comprehensive slum development policy will be prepared in about two months to make a slum-free state.“The proposed policy, which is in a draft form, will have legal provisions to evict a benami house-owner, ensure the beneficiaries are genuine and only the needy will get the new houses,” he said.“I have discussed this with the officials of the urban development as well as the law departments,” the housing minister said, while speaking to reporters here on Wednesday. He said as many as 2,723 slums have been identified throughout the state, whose population could be around 40 to 45 lakh. Of this, 496 slums are built on government land, 1,084 slums in urban pockets and 606 slums are built on private land. In Bangalore city alone, there are about 506 slums, the minister detailed. According to Somanna, the objective of the state government as per the proposed policy is to construct strong houses on the same land where the slums exist with all basic amenities including broad roads, drains, trees and community borewells. Since it is going to be the government endeavour of constructing RCC-roof houses with basic amenities, a nominal amount will be collected from the slum-dwellers. “It is estimated that, constructing a house on 20X30 sq ft site would cost `200 per sq m. However, the economics is being worked out which will be mentioned in the proposed policy,” the housing minister added. The housing minister said that the proposed policy will explore the feasibility of bringing all housing schemes — Basava Housing Scheme, Vajpayee Housing Yojana and Rajiv Gandhi Rural Housing Project — together to avoid overlapping and duplicity of the work.
