New Delhi: The anti-terrorist squad (ATS) of Gujarat police on Wednesday arrested two persons, including one posing as the personal assistant of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, for allegedly duping people of a huge amount of money.
The arrests were made after a businessman lodged a complaint alleging that he was cheated of Rs 25 lakh by one of the accused Bharat Patel (40) over the past few months.
Police officials said that the duo took the businessman to cities, including Bangalore and Jaipur, as part of the Sarva Siksja Abhiyaanm and also swindled Rs 35 lakh from him as part payment.
However, when they could not deliver goods on time, the businessman sought his money back but was given only Rs 10 lakh following which he lodged the complaint.
Police said that Patel used to assure government officials that he could "fix" postings and transfers within the Central government and also "clear" disputed land deals.
According to ATS DIG Rajan Priyadarshi, Patel had been cheating people since 2002 by introducing himself as Modi's PA.
