CHENNAI: “Catholic priests are instigating anti-Koodankulam Nuclear Power Plant (KKNPP) protests with the funds mobilised from countries which are against the development of our nation,” TK Sathiaseelan, founder president, All India Congress Labour Front (AICLF), said here on Wednesday.Speaking to reporters, he said the Catholic Bishop in Nagercoil had been talking against KKNPP even during the mass wherein Holy Eucharist was served.“The functions of bishops are to offer worship and to conduct masses. Under the guise of fast, the attendees from the local villages are being paid `500 per day and a square meal with either chicken 65 ormutton chukka”, Sathiaseelan claimed. “In fact, foreign forces are behind the anti-KKNPP movement since the Catholic diocese is not funding the protests. The Catholic priests were funding the vehicle cost and the food expenses in the so-called fast in Idinthakarai. If the Church is not funding, who else could that be? Therefore, it clearly shows that there are vested interests in anti-KKNPP movement,” he observed. Those who were behind the fast had been obstructing kids from going to school and 30 cases were filed in this connection.Referring to Vaiko, he said that some politicians were trying to gain political mileage through the issue. With no actual support, the protestors had been approaching people in Chennai and had managed to convince politicians by offering pecuniary benefits.“AICLF will launch a one-lakh signature campaign and will present it to Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa. A rally supporting KKNPP will be held at Koodankulam by the front on December 10,” he said.
