MTC bus mows down 2 at Central

CHENNAI: Two persons, including a five-year-old girl, were killed and seven others injured when a Metro Transport Corporation (MTC) bus plunged into a crowd of waiting passengers at the Central bus stand here on Thursday evening. The incident occurred around 8.30 pm, when the driver of MTC bus lost control of the vehicle while entering the Central bus stand and plunged into the waiting crowd, killing Kumaresan (33) of Villivakkam on the spot. A five-year-old girl, Ayesha succumbed to injuries at the GH.Seven others, including Revathi (23), Gowtham (4) of Island Grounds, Jeyamohan (30) of Kattukuppam and Chellappan (70) of Kerala, suffered injuries. The driver Anand Raj and the conductor fled the spot. Police then rushed to the spot and cleared the traffic. A police official said that there were less casualities since the bus hit a taxi after hitting the waiting passengers. Preliminary investigations revealed that the driver lost control of the vehicle because of a brake failure, the officer added.“It only raises the question of maintenance of MTC buses in the city,” said the official, recalling a similar incident last week, when an MTC bus rammed into a private hotel at Egmore due to brake failure.DMK Man’s Car Kills Four-Year-Old A four-year-old boy was killed on the spot after a DMK functionary’s car ran over him on the Triplicane High Road on Thursday.Naresh, who stayed with his father Ravi on the footpath along the Triplicane High Road was run over by the car after it entered a sticker shop. The police after investigations traced the murder to Durai. On interrogation, Durai confessed to have committed the murder. He said that he stabbed Veerasamy on his neck with a sharp rod after the latter forced Durai to give him money to buy alcohol.
