Kerala Health Minister Veena George on Wednesday confirmed that a person being treated for symptoms of Mpox in Malappuram district has been diagnosed with the disease.

The patient has been identified as a 38-year-old man who arrived from the UAE last week.

The man, originally from Edavanna town, developed rashes and a fever a few days after arriving from the UAE. He was admitted to the state-run Manjeri Medical College Hospital on Monday and was isolated.

The man’s samples were sent for testing at Kozhikode Medical College, and the results confirmed a positive diagnosis on Wednesday.

In a Facebook post, the minister also urged anyone arriving from abroad to seek medical attention if they experience symptoms and to notify the health department.

“The health department has arranged for treatment and isolation facilities at the hospitals listed below. Contact numbers for the nodal officers have also been provided. Additionally, treatment facilities have been established at all medical colleges,” George post read.

What is Mpox?

Mpox or monkeypox infections are generally self-limiting, lasting between two and four weeks, and patients usually recover with supportive medical care. The disease is transmitted through prolonged and close contact with an infected person.

Symptoms typically include fever, rash, and swollen lymph nodes, and it can lead to a range of medical complications.
